Anish Giri, born in 1994 in Saint Petersburg, is a Dutch chess Grandmaster who became one of the youngest in history to earn the title at just 14. Giri quickly rose through the ranks, establishing himself as a top-tier player with his strategic, solid playing style. He has represented the Netherlands in six Chess Olympiads and won the national championship five times, most recently in 2023.
In 2024, Giri's performance has been particularly noteworthy. He’s showed his prowess at the Tata Steel tournament, finishing joint first with a score of 8.5/13, including 5 wins. However, despite this strong performance, he narrowly missed out on claiming the title in the tiebreaker semifinals against Gukesh D. Following this intense competition, Giri participated in the revived Shenzhen Masters, where he had previously won in 2019. This tournament proved to be more challenging, as he finished 7th out of 8 players, a result that led to a drop in his FIDE ranking, pushing him out of the world's Top 10.
Giri’s career is marked by significant international victories, including the Corus Chess B Group in 2010, the 2012 Reggio Emilia tournament, and the 2023 Tata Steel Chess Tournament. His peak rating of 2798, achieved in 2015, positioned him as one of the strongest players globally, and he reached a career-high world ranking of No. 3 in 2016.
Beyond competitive chess, Giri has developed a strong presence as a commentator, author, and content creator. He has written for chess publications and created educational content on platforms like Chessable. Giri is also active on social media and YouTube, where his instructional videos and humorous interactions with other top players have garnered him a large following. Married to fellow chess player Sopiko Guramishvili, Giri is fluent in multiple languages and continues to be a prominent figure in the chess world.
